The Finnish airline Blue1 has become one of the first network carriers in the Nordic countries to receive an ISO 14001 certificate for its environmental management system. Sustainability is an essential part of Blue1’s growth strategy.
ISO 14001 certification covers Blue1’s operations. Auditing and certification of Blue1’s environmental management system was provided by Bureau Veritas Certification Finland.
The International Air Transport Association IATA has raised environmental responsibility as a top priority for aviation, alongside safety and security. Equally, Blue1 aims to create responsible and sustainable traffic growth by constantly reducing the environmental impact of its operations. This is implemented by continuous improvement of environmental procedures and by a commitment to challenging environmental objectives.
Blue1’s certified environmental management system takes a systematic approach to environmental commitment and continual improvement of Blue1’s environmental performance. The main emphasis is on executing three environmental programmes in flight, cabin and technical operations. With the help of these environmental programmes the most critical environmental aspects of Blue1’s operations will be concretely affected. These are carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, aircraft noise, unsorted in-flight waste and hazardous chemicals.
The certification of the Blue1 environmental management system in accordance with the ISO 14001 Standard is a major step for Blue1. ISO 14001 enables the guidance and development of Blue1’s environmental procedures. It also helps the company to document and demonstrate the achievement of environmental targets in accordance with an internationally recognized standard.
