1988: Blue1, formerly Air Botnia, begins operating domestically in Finland.
1998: the airline becomes a fully-owned subsidiary of SAS.
1999: airline strategy moves toward the Scandinavian hubs of Copenhagen, Oslo, and Stockholm.
2000: Blue1 and SAS unite their organizations. Major fleet renewal takes place with the introduction of Avro RJ 85 jets. By now, Blue1 has one of the youngest fleets in Europe.
2003: the airline announces a name change to Blue1, which becomes official in 2004. The new name reflects the airline’s rapid growth and modern business strategy
2004: the number of routes increases rapidly and Blue1 becomes a regional Star Alliance member. Blue1 starts operations in domestic Finland: Helsinki–Oulu and Helsinki–Kuopio.
2005: new domestic routes, Helsinki–Vaasa and Helsinki–Rovaniemi, open.
2006: heavy expansion program into Europe, both to business destinations in Berlin, Hamburg, Paris, Warsaw, London, and Zurich and to southern leisure resorts in Nice, Rome, Athens, and Barcelona. Blue1 flies an all-jet, modern, fuel-efficient, and environmentally-friendly fleet. Blue1 launches Café1: the buy-on-board concept.
2007: Blue1 introduces its new business travel concept, Economy Extra, first on Scandinavian routes and then on European routes. The new Blue1 hangar is ready near the Helsinki-Vantaa airport. Blue1 offers customers the option to offset flight emissions.
2008: Economy Extra is introduced on domestic routes.
2009: Blue1 introduces five new routes: Ivalo and Kuusamo in domestic Finland as well as Split, Dubrovnik and Biarritz in continental Europe.
2010: Blue1 moves to a full member of Star Alliance and receives the ISO 14001 environmental certification. Blue1 directs strongly on business travel, introduces the Boeing 717-type of aircraft, as well as opens up new routes and frequencies to Europe. At the end of the year Blue1 renews its business travel product to Blue1 Premium.
